FAQs

What is legal expenses insurance?

Legal expenses insurance provides cover for the costs incurred when pursuing or defending against specific legal actions.

In a YouGov SME market survey of 1,000 SMEs carried out by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), it was cited that businesses will experience 8 legal issues in a year on average, exposing them to thousands in solicitors' fees.

Given the significant likelihood of disputes with parties like clients, suppliers, or employees, having protection through a legal expenses insurance policy is invaluable for small businesses.

What’s the difference between legal expenses insurance and professional indemnity insurance?

Legal expenses insurance provides cover for various potential legal disputes a business might encounter, ranging from Health & Safety Executive investigations to contract and employment disputes. It also covers the costs associated with attending court for a claim covered under the policy.

In contrast, professional indemnity insurance is specifically designed to protect against allegations of professional negligence. This includes errors or mistakes made in work, such as a project or report, for a client.

BTE and ATE cover, what’s the difference and which do you offer?

BTE (before-the-event) legal expense insurance is acquired before any legal issues arise and provides broader coverage for various potential legal disputes.

ATE (after-the-event) legal expense insurance, on the other hand, is obtained after a specific incident has occurred and is focused on covering the legal costs associated with a particular claim or lawsuit. It requires a solicitor to have assessed the case and be prepared to offer a no win no fee agreement.

We offer both BTE and ATE solutions, get in touch to see how we can assist.

What makes Epoq’s Legal Expenses Insurance unique?

Unlike most legal expenses insurance providers and policies in the market, Epoq’s legal expenses product includes free access to high-value legal services delivered by a regulated law firm.

Our product offers a unique combination of pre-need and at-need services. This helps the broker provide clients with holistic protection that goes beyond the traditional customer experience of incept and renew, with the chance of a poor claims experience in the middle.

It meets the FCA’s Consumer Duty requirement of identifying, monitoring, evidencing and standing behind the outcomes your clients experience, creating real value thereby justifying commissions (which are an ongoing industry concern).

Do you offer bespoke cover?

Businesses vary and in accordance with the FCA’s Consumer Duty regulations, cover should be tailored to ensure policyholders’ needs are met and that they get value from a policy beyond ‘price’.

To help brokers meet these objectives, Epoq’s legal expenses cover is tailored to cover the risks relevant to an individual, business or landlord, so policyholders don’t pay for something they might not need.

Do you have any trade restrictions?

Unlike many legal expenses insurance providers, we have no trade restrictions which means we can provide cover for all of your clients, regardless of the industry they operate in.

Do you offer family legal expenses insurance?

Yes. We offer bespoke family legal expenses insurance, which includes a range of legal services for individuals, such as wills, lasting powers of attorney and more. Get in touch to see how we can assist.

Do you offer landlord legal expenses insurance?

Yes. We offer bespoke landlord legal expenses insurance, which includes a range of legal services including an online landlord advisor, a range of smart legal contracts and more. Read more here or get in touch to see how we can assist.

Do you offer Rent Guarantee cover?

Our landlords’ legal expenses insurance can optionally include rent guarantee cover. Much like a commercial combined policy which covers multiple risks under a single policy, we can provide holistic cover, as well as control costs. (Our rent guarantee is unfortunately not available standalone outside of a legal expenses policy.)

Can I offer my clients LegalAde but retain my existing insurance product?

Whilst the LegalAde service is only available for Epoq Legal Expenses Insurance policyholders, we do have a range of other platforms that you can make available to your clients either on a cobranded or white labelled basis to enhance their existing cover. Get in touch to see how we can assist.
